Tribute to Mr. J.W. Breeks - the first commissioner of the Nilgiris

The death anniversary of Mr. J. W. Breeks, the first commissioner of the Nilgiris was observed on 6th June by the government officials at the graveyard in St. Stephen's church near the collector office of Ooty.

 

Mr. Venugopal, the Director of Nilgiris Documentation Centre, and Mr. E.M. Murali Kumar, president of Nilgiris Hotels and Restaurants Association participated in the event and paid tribute to the memorial of Mr. Breeks.

 

Mr. Venugopal praised Mr. Breeks regarding his contribution and works for the welfare and development of the Nilgiris. He also added that the researches made by Breeks on caves, ponds, and inscriptions on the Ooty mountains, revealed that people were living in Nilgiris before 3000 years ago.

 

The book "Primitive Tribes and Monuments of the Nilgiris" written by J. W. Breeks illustrating the life and culture of Badagas, Todas, Kothas, Irulas, and Kurumbas was also praised by the Director. Mr. Venugopal , He also explained the history and culture of Nilgiris District to the public and tourists during this event.
