The forest department of Nilgiris conducts the bird count in the Nilgiris district every year, to know about the different kinds of birds and the number of birds inhabiting the Queen of Hills.

 

This year, the Wildlife Association of Kotagiri performed the bird count survey in the mountainous slopes of Nilgiris and found that the bird count has drastically increased compared to the last year, due to the perfect weather condition prevailing in the Nilgiris.

 

Nilgiris has become a hotspot for the bird watchers and tourists, as they can spot many varieties of birds such as flycatchers, Black eagle, Eurasian blackbirds, Nilgiri wood pigeon, Sunbirds, Jungle Babblers, Pied Bushchats, Crested serpent eagle, Tailorbirds, Shaheen falcon, Bay backed shrikes, Crested goshawk, Flowerpeckers, Grey bellied cuckoo, Blue faced malkoha, Common hawk cuckoo, Drongo-cuckoo, Common Ioras, Jacobin cuckoo, and Tits.

 

The famous bird watching spots of the Nilgiris include Ooty Botanical garden, Mudumalai, Masinagudi, Kalhatty falls, Toda mund area, Wood house, Mavanahalla, Lambs rock and Pomological station near Coonoor, Kotagiri, Muthorai, Cairn hill forest reserve, and Theppakad.

 

The tourist department has been taking special care to the above mentioned places to increase the bird count, to attract bird watchers, environmentalists, naturalists, conservationist, and tourists to visit Nilgiris to see different varieties of indigeneous birds in the Queen of Hills.
