A simple hand-held device is now being used by Gudalur forest department to chase away elephants. The device known as PVC gun is safe for both the staff and the elephants. The gun uses calcium carbide which is mixed with water, to produce gas which is triggered to produce a loud bang sound to drive away the elephants roaming inside the villages into the forest area.

Since calcium carbide is very cheaper, the gun is less expensive to produce. The gun is being used effectively in O'Valley and Pandalur ranges for the last couple of weeks. As the gun is made of PVC pipes, they gun can be repaired and fixed easily, even it is broken.

The forest staffs are advised to remain at a safe distance during chasing away the elephants into forests. The district forest officer of Gudalur Forest Division, said that the gun is safer than the firecrackers and does not harm the animals.
