Built by the British way back in 1908, Nilgiri Mountain Railways or NMR is the only rack railway in India where the train runs on a toothed rack rail providing better grips on the steep Nilgiri railtracks. NMR always have relied upon its steam locomotive fleets. In the recent past, with gradual urbanization and with implications of several eco friendly propositions diesel engines are gradually taking over the steam locomotives between the route Coonoor and Udhagamandalam. Already declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as an extension of Darjiling Himalyan Railway, NMR gradually came to be known as Mountain Railways of India. Inspite of becoming one of the oldest railways of India, NMR boasts of world class locomotives. Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works of Winterhur, Switzerland was the manufacturer of the X class steam rack locomotives. It is very understandable from Ooty toy train first class images as well as ooty train video that the solid built of the Ooty trains helps it to be used on any part of the racks in its journey between Ooty to Coonoor.

Ooty being comfortably placed in the Tamil Nadu, a large chunk of south Indian tourists visit the site, but there is no direct train from Chennai to Ooty. The best way to reach Ooty from Chennai is by availing the train service from Chennai to Mettupalayam and then reaching Ooty from there by a cab. Apart from Chennai, another place which connects with Ooty via train is Coimabatore which is relatively closer to Ooty than Chennai or Bangalore
